As the eldest grandson of President Harry S. Truman, Clifton grew up in the shadow of history, yet his family life centered around normal traditions of holidays and gatherings rather than political discussions. His grandfather rarely spoke to the family about the war or the atomic bombings, except when prompted by curiosity, where he would offer lengthy historical lessons.
 

Clifton’s perspective changed when his own son Wesley was introduced, through school, to the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who survived the Hiroshima bombing but later succumbed to leukemia. Wesley’s profound response to Sadako’s story, including wearing a kimono and embracing Japanese culture in a school project, opened Clifton’s eyes to the enduring impact of the atomic bombings on children, families, and generations beyond. This experience connected him in a deeply human way to the aftermath of decisions his grandfather had made.
 

Clifton has since dedicated much of his energy to building bridges of understanding and reconciliation between the U.S. and Japan. His involvement with *Sadako and the Magic of the Paper Cranes* ensures that this project will not only have artistic merit but will also carry the weight of authenticity, empathy, and historical significance. His voice adds credibility, compassion, and historical context to the production, making him an invaluable partner for EPE.
